New Orleans Couples Therapist, Premarital Counseling, and…

Couples counseling… it’s not the only thing I do.

p173041_1When potential clients discover that I am available for appointments only a few days per week, they often wonder what I do with the remainder of my time.  I’d like to use this post to share some of my other professional (and personal) activities.

Past-President – Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (LAMFT)

In January 2015 I began a two-year term as President of my professional organization, and in 2017 I transitioned to the role of Past-President.  LAMFT is a division of AAMFT, of which I’m a clinical fellow and active member.  LAMFT works to support the work of family therapy and couples counseling in Louisiana, provide evidenced-based training opportunities for other therapists, and support healthy families across Louisiana.  In February 2015 LAMFT hosted a conference in Baton Rouge exploring therapeutic alternatives to psychiatric medications in family problems, and in 2017, the conference focus is on overcoming infidelity.

Professor of Counseling – University of Holy Cross

Since 2007 I have been a full-time faculty member at UHC in Algiers.  I teach family therapy courses to graduate students who are training to be mental health professionals.  UHC has a wonderful counseling training program, and also has a counseling training clinic, where community members can receive great counseling at reduced rates.

Classes that I regularly teach at UHC include: Mimi Sammis

  • Counseling Families
  • Couples Therapy (including premarital counseling)
  • Sex Therapy
  • Counseling Diverse Populations
  • Attachment Theory
  • Supervisor of Clinical Internship

Honduras Training Institute

In coordination Dr. Roy Salgado, Jr, a friend and colleague, we’ve been working for years to develop and implement projects to improve the access of underserved populations to mental health services, notably those from Central America.  Currently, we’re working to train Honduran mental health professionals in family therapy so that they can counsel families dealing with immigration trauma and unaccompanied minors who are making their way to Louisiana.

Oh, I’m also a dad, husband, entrepreneur, idealist, and friend.

I want to be known as someone who is thoughtful, present, compassionate, curious, and encouraging.  I have to decide everyday to live out these values, shifting them from ideas to experiences.
